Home Maintenance Schedule

The Prophet (SAW) advised to: “Take benefit of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied, and your life before your death” (Narrated by Ibn Abbas and reported by Al Hakim)

As the fourth year of my marriage approaches, I am reflecting on the kind of wife I was, am, and would like to be. I’ve spent the majority of our marriage so far working overtime, being stressed, and being stretched too thin. Maintaining the home was always a secondary priority and that responsibility was obviously shared with my husband as we were both working full-time (and beyond).

A few months ago, we decided it was time for me to leave the work force due to several personal reasons and I was very excited to assume a new role of housewife, or what I like to call a “homemaker.” I gave myself a couple of months after leaving work to settle into my new role, entertain several out-of-town guests, visit out-of-town family, move into our new apartment home, and simply reward myself with some much needed rest in order to recover from years of being overworked. However, I’m now ready to get back into a routine that will allow me to be productive and use my time wisely.

I had dreamed of many things I wanted to accomplish once I leave the workforce. I wanted to work on our health, fitness, relationships, business goals, and deen (worship of God). I also wanted to turn our apartment into a lovely home for my husband, our guests, and myself. I want to make it a welcoming place where we are comfortable, happy, and safe (In Shaa Allah, God-Willing). Part of this goal requires me to keep the home tidy and organized as both my husband and I love cleanliness. Therefore, I did a lot of research and created a routine that would allow me to use my time productively so that I could maintain our home, keep up with our very busy social life, and pursue our other dreams mentioned above. This routine would allow me to always have a decently maintained home by cleaning a little everyday instead of resorting to stressful periods of intensive cleaning.

‘By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience’

(The Holy Quran, Surah Al-‘Asr – The Declining Day)

This routine is just a guidance for myself and by no means can I follow it exactly every day as each day has its own demands, often with unexpected priorities that need my attention. However, I find that starting each day with a clean kitchen, at the bare minimum, lets me start of my day easily and on the right foot since I don’t have to first clean dishes or my workspace in order to start cooking. I can just dive right in. So, even if I cannot always follow the schedule to the last detail, I will try to at least keep the kitchen as clean as possible, In Shaa Allah.

Currently, it’s a little hard to keep our home completely clutter-free as I’m still unpacking. However, after I’m done unpacking, I would like to follow this routine to a point where I am ready to have guests over at any time with minimal stress and tidying. It’s not just about the guests though. I know that getting to such a point would really make our home a happier and less stressful place since most of the work will be done before my husband returns home and we will both be free to enjoy our time together.

I thought I would share my new routine with all of you in case it can help you in any way if you too are struggling with maintaining your home. Please note that this schedule has been inspired by looking at many other peoples’ routines. I also took notes from flylady.com and several youtubers as suggested by a friend. I have tailored this routine to meet my specific needs and I know it will probably differ from your needs, especially if you have children. Still, I hope it helps to provides a good foundation upon which to create your own routine, if you are so inclined.
